COMMUNITY SERVICE
Community Service has always been a part of NCC. In the past we have donated and worked with various organizations, such as:
- Meals From The Heartland
- Rebuilding Together
- Children and Families of Iowa
- Food Bank of Iowa
- Can Do Cancer
- DMARC
Think DONATING, think VOLUNTEERING! Giving is always appreciated! ... and remember to APPRECIATE yourself!
Support the work and mission of Meals From The Heartland and help save starving children — one meal at a time. Volunteer and change a life. Give and make a difference. Every dollar and every hour you give could mean a better life for a hungry child, right here at home or abroad. Every meal is an opportunity for hope, wherever people are undernourished or starving. When you volunteer to fight hunger, not only are you feeding hungry children, but meal packaging is an enjoyable, rewarding experience.
Packaging: During a 2-hour shift, volunteers stand for 2 hours to pack meals. It's fun, a great way to visit with NCC members, and the shift is over before you know it!
Day/Location: Meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month, 2:30-4:30 pm, 357 Lincoln St, WDM
Rebuilding Together helps our neighbors in need (low-income, elderly, veteran, disabled) by improving the safety and health of their homes. NCC volunteers go to the approved homes to help with light house cleaning, minor repairs, plant flowers, plant flowers, fall cleanup, etc. The "extra hands" uplift our neighbors and help to rebuild their lives.
Hunger isn't a problem that happens somewhere else. It happens right here in Iowa ... in our communities. More people are visiting food pantries because of higher prices for food, fuel, housing, and utilities. Food Bank of Iowa and its 700 partners have broken records in the number receiving food assistance -- the highest in its 40-year history. The Food Bank of Iowa has spent 650% more to purchase food this year
Children and Families of Iowa is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and families in Iowa. Founded in 1888, it is one of Iowa’s largest providers of family services. The organization helps everyone from children who need a safe home to adults learning to cope with trauma. Program areas include:
Domestic violence services:
* Emergency shelter, food, clothing, transportation, and support groups for victims and their children
* Family support programs – help for families in crisis
* Early childhood development services – childcare for low-income families
Donate: * Diapers and baby wipes * Women’s sanitary products * Financial donations
Can Do Cancer can be an overwhelming time. This local, nonprofit organization provides information and services to help women navigate through cancer.
Des Moines Area Religious Council statistics:
- Food insecurity is an immediate need
- Increasing numbers are using food pantries
- Affects every neighborhood in DM Metro
- 1 in 5 DM residents use DMARC
Because of the recent Iowa disasters in spring 2024, NCC took a collection to help people affected by these storms.
